Rodgers retiring in '27, calls '26 reunion with HC McCarthy a 'pinch-me moment'

But the Pittsburgh quarterback revealed he wasn't even open to coming back until the Steelers hired an old friend.

Here, we look at how close the future Hall of Famer came to never playing another down, and the moment that changed his mind.

Rodgers 'love' of reunion with HC Mike McCarthy

Rodgers' declaration that this would be his last year was short but sweet.

But wind back to mid-January, right before the Steelers appointed Mike McCarthy as the new head coach, and the picture looked very different.

Rodgers and McCarthy spent 13 successful years together in Green Bay, making the playoffs nine times and winning a Super Bowl.

When Mike Tomlin stepped away after 19 years, Rodgers thought it was game over for him, too.

"I love Mike T. I really appreciate the opportunity to come in last year and love my experience with him," Rodgers said.

"I thought when he said he was stepping away, that was an emotional moment just because we all love him so much and care about him. I thought that was probably it for me in Pittsburgh.

Then came the turning point for Rodgers. "When the decision was made to hire Mike (McCarthy), I started to open my mind back up to coming back," he said.

"There's definitely a full-circle aspect to it that piqued my interest from the start," he added.

Rodgers, who lobbied for McCarthy's appointment, saw it as the final piece of the puzzle in his decision to return.

Rodgers on the Steelers' offensive outlook

Despite Rodgers' experience with McCarthy's offensive scheme, there are still some new wrinkles to work out.

"He's changed some stuff when he was in Dallas with Dak," Rodgers said. "I'll battle on a couple of things that I'll be stubborn about, terminology-wise. It's a fun learning experience right now." 

Rodgers also needs to establish a rapport with Michael Pittman, who racked up over 5,000 receiving yards in six seasons with the Colts before joining Pittsburgh in a March trade.

He must do the same with second-round rookie Germie Bernard, too, while relying on first-rounder Max Iheanachor to provide an upgrade at offensive tackle.

With D.K. Metcalf also in the mix, the bar for the offense is much higher than it was last year, when Rodgers posted 24 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.8 passer rating under a coach he'd never worked with before.

Bringing in more offensive talent was important, but Rodgers left no doubt that the best offseason addition to the Steelers' ranks was McCarthy, expressing more excitement about the reunion.

"It was surreal, honestly, sitting in a meeting, the first 8 o'clock meeting on Monday. It took me back to being a 22-year-old kid sitting in Green Bay, listening to Mike's first meeting in 2006," he said.

"It's like a pinch-me moment."

Could a happy Rodgers mean Pittsburgh retains their AFC North title in 2026 and makes a playoff run? It will be tough, but the early signs are promising.
