Alec Pierce: Daniel Jones return ‘huge’ factor in Colts extension decision

According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Patriots, Commanders, Raiders, and Titans were all interested in securing the wideout's services.

Ultimately, the 25-year-old put pen to paper on a new four-year, $114 million deal to remain in Indianapolis.

Pierce ‘wanted to be’ in Indianapolis

Asked how he feels about staying with the Colts, Pierce made it clear that it was always his preference.

“It feels great. Through the whole process, this is where I wanted to be, so I was just happy that we were able to work out a deal and lock me down here for four more years.”

That commitment comes after a season in which Pierce became one of the league's most dangerous big-play threats.

On limited volume, Pierce still delivered, turning 84 targets into 1,003 yards and leading the NFL with 21.3 yards per catch.

Pierce has mixed feelings on Pittman's exit 

Having previously discussed wanting more targets, Pierce looks likely to get his wish after the departure of former teammate Michael Pittman, who was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pierce reflected upon what he learned from playing alongside Pittman.

“Really happy I got the chance to play with him…. I learned so much from him… he really took me under his wing and taught me how to be an NFL player.

“Pitt was a huge presence in the locker room; he’ll definitely be missed. We’re gonna miss his leadership.”

The absence of Pittman leaves a clear void both on the field and off, but it also presents an opportunity for Pierce to take on a more significant role, and he appears ready for the responsibility.

“There will be some opportunities out there. Other people have got to step up," he continued. “I know we have guys in the room that can do it.”

Pierce also revealed that the quarterback situation played a major role in his decision to stay.

After initially being given the transition tag, 2025 starter Daniel Jones was signed to a two-year extension.

That moment proved pivotal for Pierce.

Pierce shares history with Colts' cornerback Sauce Gardner, having spent time together as members of the Cincinnati Bearcats.

As free agency approached, Gardner - who joined Indianapolis in a midseason trade from the New York Jets - lobbied to keep his former college teammate with the Colts.

The campaigning clearly worked.

Pierce joked that he's relieved to be allowed out of the basement, discussing how it is, “Good to see some sunlight".

Asked how he feels about playing alongside Gardner going forward, Pierce heaped praise on the cornerback.

“I'm excited this year to get to play with him.... I know how talented he is, how tough he can be for a receiver to go against. I'm excited to see him go out there and dominate.”

With his long-term future now secure, Pierce enters the next phase of his career with a clear opportunity in front of him.

The Colts have backed him, the quarterback situation is settled, and the path to a larger offensive role is there.
