Why is the NFL's best safety still being hard on himself?

Achieving those feats before he turned 25 might make you think the Baltimore Ravens safety is satisfied with his lot, but that couldn't be further from the case.

"I feel like I've got a long way to go to be where I feel like I can be as a player," Hamilton told the media this week.

Where Hamilton feels he can improve

The safety position has evolved as much as any in the NFL in the modern game.

Hulking run-stoppers of yesteryear are a thing of the past, replaced with more dynamic versions expected to line up in multiple positions.

There's no better example than Hamilton, who on any given play can be found on the defensive line, in the box, as a deep safety, and manning the slot.

Minter, about to embark on his first year in a head coaching role after impressing as the DC for the Chargers, raved about Hamilton's versatility.

"He's a one-of-one player in this league," Minter told reporters. "Put him in one spot, and he can maybe be the best in the league, put him in another spot, he can be the best in the league."

While Minter left no doubts about what he thinks of Hamilton's ability, the player himself pushed back on that evaluation.

"I don't want to be Jack of all trades, master of none, and I feel like I haven't mastered anything right now," he said.

Hamilton's no longer the highest-paid safety

Hamilton became the highest-paid safety in the league in August 2025 when he landed a four-year extension worth $25.1 million per year.

He held that title until Derwin James of the Los Angeles Chargers surpassed him in May 2026 with a deal that pays him $100k more annually.

The ever-increasing salary cap means record deals are signed all the time, but it's a moot point as Hamilton won't be sweating the issue.

What may matter more is that James excelled in a Bolts' scheme led by Minter, and now Hamilton is set to reap the benefits of playing in the same scheme.

If that means the 25-year-old can play even better than he already has, the Ravens' defense should not only bounce back in 2026, but could help the team make some noise in the playoffs.
