Bo Nix 2026 outlook: Can he deliver a Super Bowl for the Broncos?
Watch the 2026 NFL season live on DAZN

The Denver Broncos wrapped up mandatory minicamp with Bo Nix back on the practice field, and Sean Payton told the media his young quarterback will be "full go" when training camp opens.

With Nix recovering quickly, a stellar defense, and star wideout Jaylen Waddle joining the offense, the Broncos enter 2026 with the Super Bowl in mind.

But how far can Nix really take this franchise? Here, I assess how Nix played in 2025 and what his 2026 outlook could bring.

How Nix's 2025 played out

The bad

Nix's rookie year ended with a poor showing against Buffalo in the Wild Card game, but he showed enough in the regular season to make all but his harshest critics optimistic for year two.

If anyone had told me that the 2025 Broncos would finish 14-3, win the AFC West for the first time in a decade, and defeat the Bills in the playoffs, I'd have assumed Nix had been a major reason behind it.

He was, of course, because every starting quarterback plays a huge part in their team's fortunes, but his overall performance was far from elite.

Despite leading the league with 612 passing attempts, Nix ranked eighth in passing yards with 3,931, and tied for 9th with 25 passing touchdowns.

His passing yards barely improved from his rookie season, his completion rate slipped to 63.4%, and the passer rating fell nearly six points to 87.8.

That completion rate could be forgiven if he was trying to go deep often, but at 6.4 yards per attempt, that just wasn't the case.

Nix has received credit from certain quarters because he avoided taking too many sacks, but any praise in that respect has been somewhat misplaced.

He was playing behind a mostly healthy elite pass-blocking offensive line and, per PFF, was partly responsible for 21.1% of the pressures he faced, the seventh-worst number in the league.

The good

It may seem odd to start with this, but a point he rarely gets credit for is how good Nix is with his legs. When plays break down, or on designed runs, he can create real problems.

Wins are not a quarterback statistic, especially when you're playing with a defense as elite as the Broncos', but Nix deserves at least partial credit for the Broncos' 14-3 record.

His regular-season performances against the Packers, Colts, and Cowboys were impressive, and he did just enough to help Denver defeat the Chiefs twice.

His best game, maybe not statistically, but certainly when you consider the pressure he was under, was his last against the Bills in the AFC Divisional game.

Going toe-to-toe with Josh Allen, he tossed three touchdowns and held his nerve in overtime while Buffalo's defense did anything but.

"We weren't ready last year," head coach Sean Payton said at the time. "But we were ready today."

Payton didn't single out Nix in his post-game comments, beyond discussing the devastating injury that ended his season, but given the night-and-day difference between Nix's performance and the one vs. Buffalo in 2024, it applies to him as much as any other player.

Bo Nix's 2026 season outlook

Underpinning all of the negative points is a caveat so big that it's almost unfair to mention it at this late point, so I'll say it loudly to make sure it resonates.

Nix was only in his second year , and while our patience is as limited as ever, you've only got to look to the likes of Josh Allen and Bryce Young for examples of how we sometimes judge quarterbacks too early.

Heading into 2026, several factors work in Nix's favour, starting with his superb offensive line, which returns intact and is led by standout talents such as Garrett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz.

Jaylen Waddle gives Nix a receiver who can threaten vertically and force defenses to account for him on every snap, and that should have a positive for the whole offense.

Courtland Sutton will surely benefit from Waddle's presence; the rest of Nix's wideouts are a young group who can continue to ascend, and at tight end, Evan Engram has enjoyed a great camp.

And rookie Jonah Coleman gives the Broncos better depth at running back behind J.K. Dobbins and R.J. Harvey.

Davis Webb takes over playcalling duties for the first time, which adds unpredictability, and it's not a change I completely understand, given Payton's experience and talent in that regard.

But that point aside, everything else surrounding Nix is a quarterback's dream come true.

The jury is still out, and he has a lot of work to do, but there are plenty of reasons to believe 2026 could be Nix's best yet.
