The Chicago Bears lose a key cog of the defense as offseason acquisition, safety Coby Bryant, is out for eight to weeks after hyperextending his left knee and sustaining a bone bruise and small fracture during Monday morning practice, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Â
Schefter said that Bryant will not need surgery to repair the fracture.Â
The injury happened on the first day Bears players were wearing pads. Bryant was doing a one-on-one drill with tight end Cole Kmet when he went down clutching his knee and screaming in agony. He was visibly upset, riding on a cart back to the Bears facility to get checked out.Â
"It always sucks to see," tight end Colston Loveland said of Bryant's injury after practice. "That's part of it. You know, he's tough, he's a dog. He's going to be fine."
Bryant was the Bears' marquee free agent pickup during the offseason by signing a three-year, $40 million contract after helping lead the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl LX victory over the New England Patriots.Â
With the eight-to-ten week timeline Bryant will be out for, the 27-year-old could return between Week 3 and Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets or the Green Bay Packers, respectively.Â
