Packers WR Christian Watson signs huge extension: But did he earn it?

Wide receiver Christian Watson agreed to a four-year, $110.5 million extension with the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, with $31 million guaranteed at signing.

He had been heading into the final year of his deal, a one-year bridge contract he'd signed in September while coming back from an ACL tear.

Watson's comeback clearly impressed the Packers' front office enough to commit to him long-term, and the man himself couldn't be happier with their decision.

"Grateful is an understatement. So blessed,” he posted on his Instagram story after the news broke.

Inside the numbers: Does Watson deserve the deal?

When healthy, Watson has been one of quarterback Jordan Love's most explosive weapons. The problem is that he's struggled with injuries each and every year.

He missed three games in his rookie season, eight in 2023, two in 2024, and seven in 2025.

For some teams, that might have created something of a conundrum, but the Packers know what they have in the 27-year-old.

While Green Bay clearly believe in him, the $31 million guaranteed ranks just 26th among all wide receivers, a number they arrived at with his medical history in mind.

Health aside, and with his numbers somewhat diluted by an offense that likes to spread the ball around, Watson's 2025 performance justifies his extension.

He posted 611 receiving yards in ten games after his return in October, a pretty decent return considering he was still working back to full fitness.

One of the more dangerous deep threats in the league, he finished the season ranked third among all wide receivers with 17.5 yards per reception.

His mark of 2.28 yards per route run ranked ninth among all wideouts with a minimum of 50 targets, and his drop rate decreased for the fourth year running.

He also converted 79% of his receptions for first downs, and led the team in yards in four of the 10 games he played.

Last but not least, with six touchdowns in only 10 appearances, he continued to prove he's a real threat in the end zone.

Green Bay's WR room is taking shape

Romeo Doubs left for the Patriots in free agency, and Dontayvion Wicks was traded to the Eagles, which Watson addressed during OTAs this week.

"It was definitely tough to see those guys go because they're great friends of mine, great teammates," Watson said. "This thing always keeps on moving.

"I definitely think there'll be a lot more opportunities for the guys who are out there this year, myself included. Just got to embrace that and continue to make plays when our numbers are called."

This is the second receiver extension the Packers have handed out this offseason, after Jayden Reed signed a three-year, $50.25 million deal in April.

With Watson signed, Reed locked up, and if Matthew Golden can make the leap in year two, Love has the receivers to compete in one of the toughest divisions in football.
