The New York Giants announced on Monday that they have released veteran WR Darius Slayton after seven seasons with the team.
Slayton underwent core-muscle surgery in April, but it was not expected to affect his availability for training camp.
Drafted by New York in 2019, Slayton was the Giants' longest-tenured player, now with Andrew Thomas taking his place.
The wide receiver played 106 games for the Giants with 78 starts over seven seasons.
During his time at New York, Slayton recorded 296 receptions, 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns.
In March last year, the 29-year-old signed a three-year, $36 million contract extension.
The Georgia native was rumoured to be at risk of not making the initial 53-man roster, but was featured as WR1 on the Giants depth chart after the cut.
Slayton should have no problem finding a new team with the season set to start this Wednesday.
While Slayton's absence will shake things up in the WR room in New York, it's not like the Giants are left with nothing.
Darnell Mooney and Malachi Fields have a great opportunity to step up and find their place on the team.
Odell Beckham Jr. and Malik Nabers will try to shake off any rust, with OBJ not having played in two years and Nabers returning from injury.
The Giants will likely activate Braxton Berrios from the practice squad, as the 30-year-old will prepare to make his New York debut.
New York will face the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium this Sunday.
