Frank Ragnow’s retirement shakes up the Detroit Lions’ Super Bowl hopes

Frank Ragnow's sudden retirement has sent the Detroit Lions reeling, raising concerns about how a once-dominant offensive line will hold up heading into the 2025 season.
In a message posted on his social media, Ragnow explained his decision.
It's not often a player walks away at their peak, but at just 29 and coming off his third straight Pro Bowl season, Ragnow's decision is a harsh blow to the Lions' Super Bowl ambitions.
The veteran missed 20 games over his seven-year NFL career due to various injuries but remained a dominant force when healthy. Ragnow gave up just 10 sacks during that span and earned a Pro Football Focus grade as the league's second-best center in 2024.
Particularly dominant as a run blocker, Ragnow paved the way for the Lions' offense to rack up 146.4 rushing yards per game last year, ranking sixth in the league.
Losing Ragnow is a massive blow to Detroit, but the Lions are well-prepared. They spent the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft on former Georgia Bulldog star Tate Ratledge, who, despite playing exclusively at right guard in college, got reps at center during the Lions' minicamp in May.
Ratledge has huge shoes to fill, but with just one sack allowed over three years as a starter for the Bulldogs, he may be just what the Lions need to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.
