Cowboys trade: Jerry Jones drops major hint on defensive addition

That unit, which Quinnen Williams recently described as "night and day" compared to last year's group after an offseason overhaul, could yet receive more reinforcements.

Speaking to 105.3 The Fan, Jones doubled down on previous comments that the Cowboys are still considering adding more talent.

The Cowboys' picks are not untouchable

Back in training camp, Jones was upfront about what he would give up to add a difference-maker to the roster.

"A top pick is expendable this year for me to add to somebody that meaningfully would help us now," he said at the time.

Dallas holds picks in the first, second, fourth and sixth rounds of the 2027 NFL Draft, and while Jones knows the values of those selections, his priority remains adding talent now.

"Picks are important," he said this week. "That's your consideration for the future when it gets to the draft. But what's top of mind for me right now is getting the best team we can put on this field."

Dallas has cap room after restructures

Whatever Dallas does before the trade deadline on November 10, it will not be for lack of cap space.

After restructuring the contracts of Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland and Jake Ferguson, Dallas has more than $19 million of cap space to work with.

"That does show that we have really viable, serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now," Jones said.

"If you look at it generally speaking, we're in play," he continued. "And that's the best way to describe it."

Defense is still Jones' priority

Jones seems content with what he has on offense, and after watching Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens help the unit to finish seventh in points scored in 2025, his stance makes sense.

"When you look at all of that, you probably could see more than likely depth on defense," Jones said. "Defense would be the place."

Dallas has added a multitude of talent on that side of the ball, including Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson, Von Miller and Cobie Durant.

Five of Dallas' 2026 NFL Draft picks were spent on the defensive side of the ball too, with the uber-talented safety Caleb Downs leading a packed class.

But Jones knows that he still has work to do, and he is prepared to open the chequebook to give his beloved franchise the best possible chance of reaching their potential.
