Kyler Murray signs with Vikings as former No. 1 pick bets on career revival

The 28-year-old, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, has signed a one-year contract for the league minimum.

Identified as one of our top landing spots for Murray before the signing window opened, Minnesota offers an excellent setting for him to revive his career.

He inherits an elite wideout duo in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, a reliable security blanket in tight end in T.J. Hockenson, and the makings of a solid offensive line featuring offensive tackles Brian O'Neill and Christian Darrisaw.

The Vikings weren't just our ideal destination for the dual-threat quarterback. It's a move that likely suits Murray just fine, too.

Murray's competition for a starting role in Minnesota is weak at best.

J.J. McCarthy, a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has disappointed when allowed to lead the offense.

The Vikings made it clear they wanted to bring in competition, signalling that their patience with McCarthy was wearing thin.

In Murray, they now have that competition - a quarterback who can extend plays, generate chunk yardage with his legs and, at his best, threaten defenses through the air as well.

The onus now falls on Murray, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips, and head coach Kevin O'Connell to make the most of the opportunity.

If they can, and the stars align, this one-year rental could turn into a longer-term deal for Murray by this time next year, with the Vikings or otherwise.
