Ravens, Chargers rookies among latest first-year NFL standouts

But the preseason belonged to the rookies, many of whom have used the opportunity to seize a roster spot, and possibly more.

Here are five NFL rookies who have shown they belong.

Ryan Eckley, P, Baltimore Ravens

Punters rarely turn heads, but Eckley has done just that, earning the Ravens' starting job within a month of starting his NFL career.

Selected with the No. 211 overall pick of the Draft, he joined Baltimore with little competition for the spot, but with the responsibility of proving he has what it takes to deliver at the pro

Eckley finished the preseason with nine punts, an average of 52.2 yards, a long of 60 yards, and four punts inside the 20-yard line.

The 22-year-old was the 2025 Big Ten punter of the year and made the first-team All-Big Ten in his final season at Michigan State.

Travis Burke, OT, Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers selected Burke with the No. 117 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Described by NFL analyst Lance Zierlein as a player whose "Lumbering movement limits success in space," Burke's perceived lack of athleticism hasn't held him back so far.

In 76 pass-blocking snaps in preseason games, the 23-year-old has only allowed two pressures and zero sacks.

His path to a starting role is blocked by Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, but if injury strikes again, Burke has shown he may be able to hold his own.

Sabastian Harsh, DE, Houston Texans

In May, Harsh signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent, and after an excellent preseason, he made the 53-man roster.

The Texans signed veteran Dominique Robinson to provide depth after Dylan Horton suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in early August, but it was Harsh who took the spotlight.

Through the preseason, Harsh had five tackles and one sack.

Tacario Davis, CB, Cincinnati Bengals

The rookie out of Washington was drafted by the Bengals with the No.72 overall pick and has exceeded expectations before the season has even started.

Davis finished with 11 tackles and one interception in preseason games.

With names such as DJ Ivey, DJ Turner, and Dax Hill on the Bengals, it will be hard to lock up the starting spot; however, the rookie may have a bright future if he continues to develop.

DeMonte Capehart, DT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers selected Capehart with the No. 155 overall pick, presumably to provide depth behind Vita Vea and A'Shawn Robinson.

It's too early to suggest he can contribute beyond those expectations, but early indications suggest he has what it takes to become more than just a backup.

The rookie brings a physical, aggressive demeanor, which should serve him well if he hears his number called.
