Few dates loom as large for players on the fringes of an NFL roster as cutdown day, when teams must trim from 90 players to 53.
That moment means difficult conversations for the head office and the end of the road for approximately 1,000 NFL hopefuls.
With the 2026 season drawing near, DAZN News breaks down what roster cutdown day entails, how waivers determine where released players land next, and how practice squads factor into the equation.
What does the roster cutdown mean?
Teams get to carry 90 players through the preseason, which lets coaching staffs evaluate a larger sample of rookies and fringe names than they would otherwise.
That number has to drop to 53 players once the preseason wraps up, and the process is what is known as the roster cutdown.
When is the 2026 roster cutdown deadline?
Every roster must be at 53 players by:
- UK (BST): 11pm, Sunday August 30, 2026
- US (ET): 6pm, Sunday August 30, 2026
- US (PT): 3pm, Sunday August 30, 2026
The deadline previously landed on Tuesday following the final preseason games, but has been moved up in 2026.
What happens to players cut from the 53?
While being cut can mean heartbreak for many and the end of a lifelong dream, for others, there are other routes back.
Anyone with fewer than four accrued NFL seasons goes through waivers, a process which allows other teams to 'claim' them.*
Vested veterans skip that step entirely and become free agents the moment they're released, free to sign with whoever calls first, sometimes that same day.
*A season only counts as accrued once a player has spent six or more games on a club's active, inactive, reserve/injured or reserve/PUP list in that year.
When do waiver claims get sorted?
Claims from Sunday's cuts are due by:
- UK (BST): 6pm, Monday August 31, 2026
- US (ET): 1pm, Monday August 31, 2026
- US (PT): 10am, Monday August 31, 2026
Priority for the opening stretch of the season runs off the 2026 draft order, then flips to reverse current standings from Week 4 onward, with strength of schedule breaking any ties.
What about injured reserve at cutdown?
Landing on IR during cutdown weekend has traditionally meant a player's season ends before it starts.
A rule change now lets each team tag up to two of those IR players as designated to return, and those two can come back after missing a minimum of four games rather than sitting out the whole year.
That's a cap on the return tag though, not a cap on IR itself. Teams can still place more than two players there at cutdown, the other names simply can't come back until the following season.
What is the PUP list, and how does it differ?
The physically unable to perform list covers football-related injuries specifically, kept separate from IR and separate again from the non-football injury list.
A player can't be placed on PUP once he's practiced or played in even one preseason game, a detail that trips people up most years.
Reserve/PUP doesn't count toward the 53, but it carries the same four-game absence as IR-return.
A newer rule lets those players begin a practice window after the team's second regular season game instead of waiting out the full month untouched.
How big is the practice squad?
Sixteen is the base number, with a 17th spot reserved for a player who came through the league's International Player Pathway programme.
At least 10 of those 16 spots have to go to rookies or players in their second year.
None of it is finalised until Monday's waiver period clears, since a club can't sign a player to its practice squad until every other team has been told his old contract is officially gone.
