Seahawks' Macdonald vows 'we'll be ready' for loaded NFC West

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald could be forgiven for being a little concerned, but the Super Bowl-winning head coach seems unfazed.

Seattle's response to a loaded division

"Every team is going to grow every year; that's just the way the NFL goes," Macdonald told The Athletic's Vic Tafur. "We don't play them tomorrow, so I'm not really worried about them right now."

The two caught up at the Edgewood Golf Course, where Macdonald was taking part in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

Pressed specifically on how he feels about Seattle's division rivals adding two of the biggest stars in the game, Macdonald doubled down.

"No reaction," Macdonald said. "I mean, look, those are great players, and they're doing what they do. It probably feels like that's what's best for their teams, what they need to do, and that's good.

"When it's time to play those guys, we'll be ready and put together a game plan and go rock and roll."

Macdonald tunes out Week 1 spotlight

Seattle and the New England Patriots open the season in a Super Bowl rematch one day before the Rams and 49ers get their own spotlight game in Australia.

That kind of Week 1 merry-go-round could be distracting for some, but Macdonald is only focusing on what's in front of him and his team.

"I don't care," he said, when asked directly about the Rams and 49ers' own spotlight game happening the day after his opener.

"If you start worrying about what everybody else is doing, it's just mentally taxing. It's so much easier if you don't."

McDonald's process-first mindset

"It's kind of just like last year. We never really won anything going into last year, and so we really focused on who we wanted to be and how we wanted to do things," Macdonald said.

"Now, the circumstances have changed, but the focus is still on who you want to be and to do things every day and keep evolving."

"We want to keep growing without feeling like we're defending anything," he continued. "If you go into it thinking, 'Hey, we want to defend this,' then you're thinking about the result rather than the process."

That framing extends to how little winning the Super Bowl has changed him day to day.

"You get to do things like this, which is pretty cool, but you don't feel any different winning the Super Bowl," he added.

"I've got an 18-month-old kid at home, and that's where most of our attention is. He doesn't really care that we won this Super Bowl."

The Seahawks open training camp tomorrow, one day ahead of the 49ers, and if Macdonald's comments are any indication, he'll be squarely focused on what's happening in Seattle.
