Tutu Atwell returns to the Rams in a trade with Miami

The Californian franchise has reclaimed its former wide receiver in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. In return, Miami receives running back Jarquez Hunter.

The move allows the Rams to add a new option behind Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, while also trimming a particularly crowded running back group.

Los Angeles will only be responsible for $1.075 million of Atwell's contract for the 2026 season. That is a far cry from the $10 million the player earned with the Rams in 2025.

The franchise is also expected to retain approximately $250,000 in dead cap related to Hunter's contract.

Why the Rams are bringing Tutu Atwell back

The Rams selected Atwell in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The wide receiver then spent five seasons in Los Angeles before joining Miami during the off-season.

Between 2022 and 2024, he caught 99 passes for 1,343 yards and four touchdowns. His speed allowed him to stretch defenses and provide a deep threat.

His role had diminished considerably by 2025, however. Atwell recorded just six receptions for 192 yards and one touchdown on 15 targets.

He was also made inactive on several occasions towards the end of the season, with the Rams favouring formations using three tight ends and players capable of contributing on special teams.

A spot to claim behind Nacua and Adams

Atwell's return addresses a specific need. The Rams are still looking for a reliable third wide receiver behind Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.

Atwell already knows the offense, the coaching staff and the quarterback. He can therefore slot back into a role quickly without requiring a lengthy settling-in period.

His place on the roster is not entirely guaranteed, however. Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington hold an advantage thanks to their contributions on special teams, while rookie CJ Daniels impressed during training camp and the pre-season.

Los Angeles must now determine how many wide receivers to keep on their 53-man roster.

Why Jarquez Hunter was available for trade

Selected in the fourth round of the 2025 Draft, Jarquez Hunter had limited opportunities in the Rams' backfield.

Kyren Williams and Blake Corum already occupied the top two spots in the depth chart. Ronnie Rivers also offers additional value on special teams.

Hunter's departure should allow the Rams to keep just three running backs on their final roster.

Miami, meanwhile, acquires a young player still on his rookie contract, capable of providing depth and developing within a new environment.

This trade therefore addresses a need for each team: the Rams strengthen their wide receiver group, while the Dolphins add a new option to their backfield.
