The tournament provides an opportunity for eight national teams who failed to qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, which is held this September and is live on DAZN, to have another shot at reaching their Olympic dream.

The winner of this tournament will earn a spot at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2028, which will take place ahead of the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

The event will take place at Arena Astros in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Who are the competing nations?

The eight countries taking part are the hosts, Mexico, as well as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Philippines, South Sudan and Senegal.

FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2026 - how does it work?

The eight teams have been split into two groups with four teams each.

Group A: Brazil, Argentina, South Sudan and New Zealand

Group B: Canada, Mexico, Philippines and Senegal

Every team will play the other three nations in their group once, with these matches taking place between August 17-20.

The top two sides from each group qualify for the semi-finals, with the winner of each group facing off against the runner-up in the other group.

These semi-finals will take place on August 22.

On August 23, the two semi-final winners will face off against each other in the final, with the victor earning a place at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2028.

What does the winner get?

The team that comes out on top in this tournament gets a place at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2028.

Those tournaments will be held in February 2028 ahead of the summer Olympic Games in LA.

Sixteen teams will take part across four tournaments, all happening in different locations around the world.

The teams competing are made up of the top finishers at the 2027 continental championships, with the top two at FIBA Women's AfroBasket, the top four at FIBA Women's Asia Cup and FIBA Women's AmeriCup and the top six teams from FIBA Women's EuroBasket.
