Amanda Serrano missed out on the chance to break Christy Martin's knockout record as she edged Lucrecia Manzur on Friday.

The star had been seeking another stoppage to further underline her incredible professional record in Temecula, California.

Instead, the WBA and WBO featherweight champion was pushed all the way in a 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114 majority decision.

Success at the Pechanga Resort Casino does earn Serrano her fiftieth win in the ring, but still leaves her tied with Martin's KO haul.

Nevertheless, the star will hope to earn a final shot in what is anticipated to be a farewell bout next year in her native Puerto Rico.

"I knew this girl was tough," Serrano stated atferwards. "She's young. She's 27. These girls are getting younger and stronger. She was hungry

"I knew that coming into training. I trained very hard because I knew it was an opportunity for her, so I had to come on my A game."

Widely considered one of the greatest female boxers of all time, Serrano seems nailed on for future Hall-of-Famer status when she quits.

Her trilogy with Katie Taylor - who also retires next month with a Croke Park homecoming - was one of the biggest sporting rivalries in recent years.

So, it was not to be for Amanda Serrano and the record she craves most - but nor is it the end of the road for the legendary star's ambitions too.

In edging Lucrecia Manzur across an often entertaining battle, the Puerto Rico native was forced to dig deep into her bag for further success.

Her opponent deserves plenty of credit for not being overawed too, and may feel hard done by to only nab a draw on a single scorecard too.

Now though, for Serrano, the chance to tick off that final box on what many expect to be her last bout next year will await, and on home soil.

Speculation will be feverish over which was she goes in terms of an opponent. But one thing is for certain - it will be a fitting blockbuster finale.
