Dillian Whyte stops Ebenezer Tetteh, but questions remain over lacklustre performance

The decision to face Tetteh was seen as a chance by Whyte to make a statement with a destructive performance, and from the opening bell there was a gulf in class.

Whyte’s thumping jab was landing early on and rocked Tetteh, who did respond with some punches of his own, albeit they were wild with very little landing.

The second round was more of the same. This time it was Whyte’s body shots which were causing problems for Tetteh who was unsteady on his feet. With both men going toe-to-toe in Gibraltar, the third round was one where both fighters were already showing signs of tiredness and took their foot off the gas.

While Whyte was clearly the better boxer, Tetteh did have his moments with blood trickling from his nose, but if he was to make any impact, his swinging shots needed to land.

It was clear Whyte’s early damage was having its effect on Tetteh who struggled to get off his stool at the start of round five, but he carried on, and round six saw a Whyte one-two combination stun his foe. However, this momentum towards a potential stoppage was brought to a halt when he slipped on the ring canvas.

Tetteh continued to battle on through despite being hit with a Whyte right hand in the seventh, and this prompted the referee and his corner to bring the fight to an end at the end of the round to protect the Ghanian from further damage.

After the fight, Whyte claimed that getting rounds under his belt was vital if he was to continue being a heavyweight force. However, to fans and boxing experts, this was an underwhelming performance against an opponent which was knocked out in the first round by the current IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois in 2019.

Does Whyte still have that killer instinct? Can he still be a destructive force in what is a stacked heavyweight division? 

Answers to these questions are likely to become clearer when Whyte plots his course for 2025.
