Fabio Wardley endured heartbreak when losing for the first time in his career against Daniel Dubois after he was stopped in the penultimate round of one of heavyweight boxing’s most brutal battles .
In the immediate aftermath of the contest, Wardley’s priority was comforting his mother at ringside who appeared to be massively concerned regarding the punishment her son had taken in his first heavyweight title defence.
Wardley made the perfect start to the fight as he dropped Dubois with his first attack, leaving the London man stunned on the canvas in what looked to be a fight that was going to end early.
In the third session, Dubois was dropped again, as a big right hand found the target, but Wardley was unable to sustain his work as Dubois survived again.
From that moment, Dubois had more success and he was able to work his way back into the fight, but his hard shots did not seem to be having any effect on Wardley.
That changed as the fight progressed with Wardley’s right eye closing over and his face a mask of red due to some severe nose damage, injuries that forced Dubois to go on the hunt more before the fight was finally stopped in round 11.
Distraught at the result, Wardley still received credit in defeat due to his incredible bravery with fight fans lost for words on how he was able to keep fighting so late into the fight.
With his mother worried outside the ring, Wardley reassured her by repeatedly telling her he was okay. She responds by telling her son she loves him.
Wardley will now take a well-deserved rest following his fight with Dubois, but once recovered, a rematch with Dubois could be a big possibility for the Ipswich man.
