Shannon Briggs has been inactive for over a decade but is the former lineal heavyweight champion about to make a comeback against Tommy Fury ?
One of boxing’s most popular campaigners, Briggs’ outgoing manner has endeared him to fight fans in recent years and now he could be about to land another big fight.
At the peak of his powers, Briggs was a serious threat at heavyweight, and he reached the top of the division in 1997, but a setback to Lennox Lewis the following year derailed his momentum.
Later in his career, Briggs would become WBO champion, and when the opportunity arrived to win the WBC crown, Briggs was beaten by Vitali Klitschko.
In 2016, Briggs stopped Emilio Zarate in the opening round, but he hasn't fought since.
In Fury, Briggs would be facing a much younger man, but would his experience be enough to help him become the first man to defeat Fury.
"I just got off the phone negotiating a fight with Tommy Fury,” said Briggs on social media.
"All I can say is Tommy don't get scared now, don't get scared Tommy. And I'm coming for your Daddy and big brother.
"I'll go for you first, then your Daddy, then your brother, let's go champ."
