Ever since suffering defeat for the first time, Ashton ‘H2O’ Sylve is back to handily winning.
The super lightweight will aim for his third straight victory tonight when he clashes with veteran Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California, and live on DAZN.
Sylve (13-1, 10 KOs) rebounded from a knockout loss to Lucas Bahdi in July 2024 by stopping Daniel Lugo in November 2025 before producing a unanimous decision over Raul Antonio Galaviz this past April. Meanwhile, Diaz (34-9-1, 15 KOs) will be looking to shake loose from a serious slump. The veteran enters this bout having lost to Alexis Rocha via points in March. Prior to that, Regis Prograis outpointed Diaz by unanimous decision as well.
Will Sylve notch his biggest victory to date? Or will Diaz generate a win to prevent a three-fight slide? DAZN News analyzes the Keys to Victory for both fighters entering tonight.
Ashton Sylve owns four inches of reach advantage against Joseph Diaz and he can optimize this edge by pot-shotting from the distance. This is something that ‘H2O’ is already adept at and he could use this method to keep points flowing in his favor.
Watch Sylve in action and he will switch stances from orthodox to southpaw and back within the groove of his fights. Doing this against a slower, older Diaz will help the 22-year-old Sylve generate different angles from which he could further exploit ‘JoJo’ with by alternating between the head and body with hand speed. The uptick in volume from the distance could drown Diaz out.
While pumping out his offense in real time, Sylve sometimes abandons his guard. This cost him his first and only loss back in July 2024 when Lucas Bahdi noticed the lax and slept ‘H2O’ with a vicious knockout.
Diaz has enough thump to make Sylve pay for such an egregious error too. Therefore, Sylve must keep a tight, disciplined guard at all times.
Giving up four inches of reach, Joseph Diaz must break the distance and get inside of Ashton Sylve’s jab. He can do this by going two gloves up and walking Sylve down, absorbing any incoming jabs along the way. Or he could parry shots to manufacture some phone booth action. Either way, he must get inside to have success in this bout.
Another way ‘JoJo’ can mandate inside action is by making hard deposits to the body. These crunching hooks could force Sylve to lower his arms, allowing Diaz to step further into the pocket and turn this fight into a slower grind that suits his style.
Far too often, Diaz goes two gloves up in a guard without letting his hands go enough. This puts him at a deficit as opponents can pluck away with volume. To ensure this does not happen tonight, ‘JoJo’ must let his hands go. Consciously increasing his output will put Diaz in a better position to have his hand raised.
One thing that Diaz, 33, continues to be a is a tough out. Of his nine losses, only one defeat had him knocked out. Behind a granite chin, ‘JoJo’ proves over and over again that he can eat punishment. A little bit too much perhaps. Therefore, Sylve must make sure to keep touching the veteran up with potshots and overall clean boxing that keeps the points and rounds tallying in his favor, though Diaz will not make this easy.
Considering Diaz has fought the likes of world champions such as Devin Haney, William Zepeda and Regis Prograis, ‘JoJo’ has a distinct experience advantage and the boxing savvy to offer Sylve a stern test. That said, I expect ‘H2O’ to wind up with a points win that he will have to diligently work for.
