Liam Wilson discusses retirement after Oscar Valdez defeat

Valdez stopped the Australian in the seventh round in Glendale, Arizona, to win the WBO interim super featherweight belt, and put himself back in the mix for a title fight later this year.

The Mexican grew into the fight after Wilson started off well, and was the better fighter at close range.

Speaking after the fight, Valdez acknowledged that Wilson had given him a tough fight, saying: “he almost had me a couple of times. He carries a punch.”

He was proud to get back to winning ways, adding: “I want to be an example,” he said. “In boxing, you might lose. In life, you might lose. But you have an obligation to come back strong.”

Wilson accepted defeat stoically, and said he planned to carry on.

“It’s the way boxing goes,” he admitted.

“I tried to box for the first few rounds, but my heart got the better of me. I’ve got to learn from it. It is what it is. Oscar’s a great champion, and it’s an honour to share the ring with him. I’m 28 years old, it’s my 16th fight, I’ve got plenty more to give.”
