Marco Antonio Barrera has faced some of the biggest names in boxing after enjoying an incredible run in the sport that saw him reign as world champion in several weight classes.
In a career that spanned 21 years, Barrera was at the highest level for the bulk of his time in the sport and he tested himself on a regular basis in some memorable fights.
In 2000, the Mexican icon featured in one of boxing's best fights of all time when he went up against countryman Erik Morales in an unforgettable encounter that was eventually won by Morales by the narrowest of margins on the scorecards.
Barrera would get revenge over Morales with two wins to take the edge in their stunning trilogy, but he is perhaps fondly remembered for his performance against Naseem Hamed in 2001.

Welcoming the British fighter to Las Vegas, Barrera was a huge underdog against the heavy-handed featherweight but Hammed had no answer for Barrera’s relentlessness and he became the first, and only, man to defeat the popular Sheffield fighter.
Barrera would also take on major names like Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Amir Khan, but after a loss to the latter in 2009, he would only fight twice more before exiting the sport in 2011 with universal respect and acclaim.
After partaking in 75 fights, Barrera credits Morales as being the best fighter he ever shared a ring with after their 36 rounds went into boxing folklore.
“Morales is definitely the toughest opponent I have faced,” said Barrera when speaking to The Ring for their Best I Faced series .
“It almost seemed whenever I hit him it wouldn’t hurt him. And he’s a guy who would constantly give me pressure, and he hit really, really hard.”
