Matchroom CEO names deadline for Fury vs. Joshua fight

The saga took another twist last week when Fury claimed in a video on social media that his fight with Joshua is now off, and then called out Oleksandr Usyk for a trilogy bout. 

However, while Fury is adamant he would be no longer taking on his domestic rival, the noise from Joshua's camp is that Fury is still on their agenda, but state that it will only take place in the UK, not the US which has been long rumoured.

Despite all the accusations, Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn's Matchroom, are still confident that the a clash with Fury can be made. 

Matchroom CEO Frank Smith gave an update on negotiations to Betway, and believes the two camps can strike a deal for what will be the biggest fight of the year. 

"I’m confident it will happen," Smith said. "I’m confident we will get there with it. If it doesn’t happen, all I can say is it’s not down to Anthony Joshua, because Anthony Joshua is ready and willing to fight."

Smith then reiterated the fact that Joshua's contract contains a stipulation where the Fury fight has to take place in the UK, and even revealed when this would have to take place by if this long-awaited showdown is to become a reality. 

"If two parties enter into a contract, both sides have got an obligation to deliver upon it. So Anthony Joshua has an obligation to turn up to a venue in the UK to fight Tyson Fury this year, by the end of December."

It feels like this week is make or break for Fury vs. Joshua with rumours of multiple announcement press conferences being cancelled. 

The November 20 fight date is also no longer feasible with it not allowing either fighter enough time to undergo a proper training camp for what will be the biggest pay day in their respective careers. 

As the Fury and Joshua saga continues, they are in danger of being swept away by an exciting heavyweight division which is preparing for a big finish to 2026 with the WBO heavyweight title rematch between Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley already generating plenty of excitement after their Fight of the Year contender four months ago.
