Australia vs Bangladesh first Test Day 1 results: Hasan Mahmud six-for stuns hosts in Darwin

Australia elected to bat after winning the toss at Marrara Stadium but were dismissed for just 198, their lowest Test total against Bangladesh.

Hasan was the star with the ball, claiming 6-55 as Bangladesh's pace attack ripped through the hosts despite Steve Smith fighting back with 71.

Bangladesh then strengthened their position with the bat, reaching 96/1 at stumps to finish Day 1 just 102 runs behind with nine first-innings wickets remaining.

Australia bowled out for 198 by Bangladesh

Australia entered the first Test as heavy favourites but endured a difficult first innings after choosing to bat.

The hosts initially reached 45 without loss before Bangladesh began to make regular breakthroughs.

Hasan led the charge as Australia's middle order struggled to build partnerships, with Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green among those unable to make significant contributions.

Smith provided Australia's main resistance.

The former captain made 71 from 109 deliveries to prevent an even more dramatic collapse, but Hasan eventually removed him before completing the best Test bowling performance of his career.

Australia were eventually dismissed for 198 in 53 overs, setting a new unwanted record for their lowest Test total against Bangladesh.

Hasan Mahmud takes career-best six wickets

Hasan finished the innings with outstanding figures of 6-55 as Bangladesh made a dream start to their first Test in Australia since 2003.

It was the 26-year-old's best performance in Test cricket and the third-best innings figures ever recorded by a Bangladesh pace bowler in the format.

His performance was even more significant given Bangladesh entered the match without injured fast bowlers Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam.

Hasan stepped up in their absence to dismantle one of the most experienced batting line-ups in international cricket and give Bangladesh a genuine opportunity to challenge for a historic victory.

Bangladesh reach 96/1 at stumps

Bangladesh then backed up their bowling performance with an impressive start to their first innings.

The visitors lost only Shadman Islam before stumps, with Mitchell Starc providing Australia's sole breakthrough.

Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque then combined for an unbeaten 60-run partnership to take Bangladesh safely through to the close.

Bangladesh finished the day on 96/1 from 24 overs, leaving them only 102 runs behind Australia's first-innings total.

Mitchell Starc makes Test history

There was at least one major positive for Australia during an otherwise difficult day.

Starc's dismissal of Shadman saw the Australian move beyond Rangana Herath's tally of 433 Test wickets and become the leading left-arm wicket-taker in the history of men's Test cricket.

The milestone added another achievement to Starc's career, but Australia will need considerably more from their bowling attack on Day 2 if they are to stop Bangladesh establishing a first-innings lead.
