Australia and South Africa to renew rich sporting rivalry at LIV Golf Michigan 2025

The event, to be played at The Cardinal at Saint John’s in Detroit, Michigan and streamed live on DAZN, caps off another thrilling season in LIV Golf.

With the inidividual competition having wrapped up last week, focus turns to the teams. While much of the attention will surely be placed upon Jon Rahm's Legion XIII, which topped the standings ahead of this weekend's event, Ripper GC and Stinger GC will bring a more patriotic flavour to the proceedings.

Ripper is comprised of Australians Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones and Lucas Herbert, while Stinger's all-South African lineup consists of Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel and Dean Burmester. The teams are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, and thus will face off in in the quarters. The players will not only be representing their teams but also their countries in the latest in a rich history of Australia vs. South Africa match-ups across sports.

"Whether it be cricket, whether it be rugby or, you know, various other sports, there's a really good, healthy competition between South Africa and Australia," Herbert said. "So I think [the rivalry] was always going to naturally develop just off that."

However, the respect between the teams means the rivalry will remain on the course, as Jones notes that the make-up of both teams is similar in terms of personalities, allowing both sides to get along quite well off the course.

Oosthuizen, Stinger's captain and one of South Africa's all-time golfing greats, echoed Jones' sentiments. 

"If you're not gonna have fun then it's sort of pointless," Oosthuizen said. "But when we step out on that golf course on Friday, it's all down to business.

"And afterwards, we're gonna sit and enjoy a beer together."
