Silver Cup success for mud-loving Galyx
Galyx demonstrated a love of heavy conditions as he made all to land the William Hill Silver Cup Handicap at Beverley.
George Bass had what looked a tricky draw in stall 12 but he cut across to the far-side rail and got the Jack Channon-trained gelding into a nice rhythm at the head of affairs early on.
He then set sail for home aboard the 5-2 favourite and had the field under pressure climbing the hill on the Westwood, galloping on to a largely untroubled three-length victory over Impartiality.
Bass said: “He relishes these conditions after two wins on this type of ground although he does go on good ground. You see the best of him when it’s like this though.
“Over this trip you’ve got the whole back straight to find our position. There wasn’t much pace on paper although he’s a horse that would normally take a lead. I didn’t want to go steady and then sprint. He just found a really good rhythm when in front and he’s pricked his ears and done that smoothly.
“He’s a horse that stays the trip well and although there is a stiff finish here, the nature of the track is quite sharp so I just wanted to get some air into him. He’s galloped all the way to the line and he’s got a great attitude.”
Pivotal Voyage made a winning debut under Tom Eaves in the Churchill Tyres EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.
Drawn on the inside she made headway along the inside rail and as the gap opened up with the majority of the field preferring to race down the centre of the course, the Kevin Ryan-trained 4-1 shot seamlessly advanced to score by a neck from Floral Maid.
Eaves said: “There’s plenty of improvement in her and the fact that she’s gone and won is a good thing. It was a bit of an unknown with the ground but that was an issue for plenty of horses and her pedigree suggested she should go on it.
“The positive coming in was that she should handle the ground but you never know until you’ve been on it. She was always going to be green on her first start, but she’s now won on debut and there’s still plenty more to come.”
Financer (4-1) showed plenty of fight to hold on by one-and-a-quarter lengths to win the Ward Homes Yorkshire Handicap, while Jason Hart who had already landed the feature Beverley Bullet Stakes aboard Jm Jungle doubled his tally aboard Harb (100-30) for Tristan Davidson in the five-furlong Constant Security Handicap.
Elsewhere, Joanna Mason was aboard Michael and David Easterby’s Court Legend (6-1) when successful in the Return Of The Legend Martin Spencer Nursery Handicap, with the concluding Napoleons Casino And Restaurant Hull Apprentice Handicap going to Tim Easterby’s 15-2 chance Marbuzet.
