NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs: Canadiens stop Hurricanes undefeated streak to steal Game 1 over the Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes plowed through to the Eastern Conference Finals. They went 8-0 in sweeping the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers. Could things be the same against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night in Raleigh?
For at least one game, the answer would be no as Montreal came out firing with four goals in the first period and never looked back to defeat Carolina 6-2 to take 1-0 series lead.
"We knew we could come in here and try to get off to a good start to the series," Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki said after a three-assist night. "We're happy with the result, but they're definitely going to be better than what they were tonight."
The tone was set by the Canadiens just 33 seconds in when Seth Jarvis put it behind. Moments later, Cole Caufield and Phillip Danault each scored goals to make it 3-0 just four minutes into the game, and the rout was on for Montreal.
To put the dagger into the hearts of Carolina, Juraj Slafkovsky scored twice in the third period to give Montreal the surprising lead in the series. Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes had 24 saves on 26 shots.
"I didn't think we were very sharp, to put it bluntly," Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said after the game. "Our top guys had tough nights. That's not going to work at this time of the year."
Game 2 is Saturday night back in Raleigh.
