Seth Jarvis Lifts Hurricanes to Historic Game 2 Comeback Win in Stanley Cup Final

The series now heads to Las Vegas tied 1-1 for Games 3 and 4.

Facing a 2-0 deficit on the scoreboard and the possibility of falling behind 2-0 in the series, Carolina's offense came alive in the third period. Sparked by Logan Stankoven and capped by Jarvis' overtime winner, the Hurricanes erased a two-goal deficit to steal Game 2.

After Game 1 featured nine goals and 52 shots, Game 2 was a different story early on. Shots were at a premium for most of the night, and scoring chances even more so. 

At least until the third period.

The Hurricanes' defense didn’t allow much from Vegas early on. Through 20 minutes, Carolina held Vegas to just two shots. One of them came off the stick of Conn Smythe Trophy favorite Brett Howden. Howden’s hot streak in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs continued with a goal a little over 13 and a half minutes into the first period.

He followed that up with his NHL-leading 13th goal of the playoffs at the 7:23 mark of the second period.

Entering the third period trailing 2-0, the atmosphere in Raleigh had noticeably shifted as fans contemplated the possibility of a daunting series deficit. That changed with just under 10 minutes to play when Stankoven scored his first goal of the series to cut the lead in half.

Mark Jankowski tied the game just over two minutes later, setting the stage for a chaotic finish in Raleigh.

Frederik Anderson, who stopped 23 shots, made no bigger save on the night than when he stopped a wraparound attempt from Ivan Barbashev. With five minutes to play, the Golden Knights tried to push the puck from under Anderson, forcing it into the net. 

Officials immediately waved the goal off, prompting Vegas head coach John Tortorella to challenge the ruling. The challenge was unsuccessful, and Carolina captain Jordan Staal’s power-play goal put Carolina up 3-2.

Vegas captain Mark Stone tied the game with 1:21 remaining in regulation, sending Game 2 to overtime.

Overtime barely had a chance to settle in before Vegas found itself shorthanded. A Tomas Hertl tripping penalty at 3:17 put the Hurricanes a man up, leading to Jarvis’ game-winning goal.

Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb left the game in the first period after taking a Nikolaj Ehlers slapshot to the face. He wouldn’t return to the game, and his status for the rest of the series is questionable.

Vegas goaltender Carter Hart stopped 22 shots, but gave up four goals on the final 11 shots of the game. Vegas' Mitch Marner and Carolina's Gostisbehere had two assists each.

The Golden Knights now head home wondering how a two-goal third-period lead slipped away. Rather than carrying a commanding 2-0 series advantage—historically a near-insurmountable position in the Stanley Cup Final—the Golden Knights will return home with the series tied and momentum suddenly up for grabs.

With the win, the Hurricanes became the first team since the 1944 Montreal Canadiens to rally from a multi-goal third-period deficit and win a Stanley Cup Final game. Carolina is also 6-0 in overtime in the playoffs.

Game 3 is set for Saturday, June 6.
