Frank Ryan (1936–2024)

Sport: American Football

Legacy: A three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Ryan led the Cleveland Browns to their last NFL Championship in 1964. Known for his intelligence - he earned a Ph.D. in mathematics—Ryan was a unique figure in the league, balancing athletic excellence with academic achievements.

Mario Zagallo (1931–2024)

Sport: Football

Legacy: Zagallo was the first person to win the FIFA World Cup as both a player (1958, 1962) and a coach (1970). A Brazilian football legend, his tactical acumen and passion for the sport shaped Brazil’s golden era, cementing his place as one of the game’s all-time greats.

Franz Beckenbauer (1945–2024)

Sport: Football

Legacy: Known as "der Kaiser," Beckenbauer revolutionized the sweeper role and was a two-time Ballon d'Or winner. He captained West Germany to victory in the 1974 World Cup and later managed the team to another title in 1990. His influence extended beyond the pitch, with contributions to football administration.

JPR Williams (1949–2024)

Sport: Rugby Union

Legacy: A key player for Wales during their golden era in the 1970s, Williams was a fearless fullback known for his hard tackling and game-changing plays. He was also a British and Irish Lions legend, playing in multiple victorious tours.

Andreas Brehme (1960–2024)

Sport: Football

Legacy: Brehme scored the winning penalty in the 1990 FIFA World Cup final, securing West Germany’s triumph over Argentina. Renowned for his ability to strike the ball with either foot, he remains one of Germany’s most celebrated defenders.

Bill Plummer (1947–2024)

Sport: Baseball

Legacy: A respected catcher, Plummer played most notably for the Cincinnati Reds, serving as a backup during their dominant Big Red Machine era in the 1970s. After retiring, he became a coach, sharing his knowledge with future generations of players.

Jerry Grote (1943–2024)

Sport: Baseball

Legacy: Grote was a key member of the 1969 ‘Miracle Mets’ who won the World Series. As a catcher, he was known for his defensive skills and ability to manage pitchers effectively. His impact on the game remains a benchmark for catchers.

Joe Kinnear (1946–2024)

Sport: Football

Legacy: A tough and reliable defender, Kinnear made his mark with Tottenham Hotspur and later managed teams like Wimbledon, where he became known for his no-nonsense style and ability to inspire underdog teams to punch above their weight.

Ken Holtzman (1945–2024)

Sport: Baseball

Legacy: Holtzman was a two-time All-Star pitcher who won three consecutive World Series titles with the Oakland Athletics from 1972 to 1974. He is remembered for his clutch performances in high-pressure games and his role in one of baseball's greatest dynasties.

Raman Subba Row (1928–2024)

Sport: Cricket

Legacy: Subba Row played for England in the late 1950s and early 1960s, excelling as a top-order batsman. His Test average of 46.85 is exceptional and he scored three centuries and four fifties. He was a key figure in England's Ashes success and later contributed to the sport as an administrator and advocate for its development.

Peter Oosterhuis (1948–2024)

Sport: Golf

Legacy: Oosterhuis was one of Europe’s most consistent golfers in the 1970s, representing the continent in multiple Ryder Cups. After retiring, he became a beloved commentator, bringing insight and passion to golf broadcasts.
