Five memorable England vs Croatia moments

Since Croatia became an independent football nation in 1992, the two sides have met 11 times, and those encounters have featured qualification heartbreak, coming-of-age performances, Golden Generation brilliance, World Cup agony and a tense European Championship showdown played in the shadow of a pandemic.

Ahead of their latest meeting in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, here are five of the most memorable chapters in a surprisingly rich rivalry.

Wally with the brolly as Croatia break England hearts (2007)

Few images are more indelibly linked to England's modern history than Steve McClaren standing beneath an umbrella on a rain-soaked Wembley touchline.

England entered their final Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia knowing victory would secure qualification. Instead, disaster struck. Goalkeeper Scott Carson endured a nightmare start, allowing Niko Kranjcar's speculative effort to squirm into the net before Ivica Olic doubled Croatia's lead.

England briefly fought back through Frank Lampard and Peter Crouch after half-time, but Mladen Petric's superb winner secured a 3-2 Croatian victory and condemned England to a first failure to qualify for a major tournament since the 1994 World Cup.

McClaren was dismissed less than 24 hours later.

Theo Walcott announces himself in Zagreb (2008)

Just under a year after England's humiliation, Fabio Capello's side returned to Zagreb seeking revenge.

What followed was one of the most exhilarating England away performances of the era. Theo Walcott, still only 19 years old, produced the finest display of his international career, scoring a stunning hat-trick as England dismantled Croatia 4-1.

Walcott's pace repeatedly exposed the hosts, while Wayne Rooney added the fourth goal in a statement victory that immediately established Capello's England as serious contenders once again.

For one night at least, Walcott looked every inch the superstar many had predicted.

Golden Generation at its devastating best (2009)

A year later, Croatia returned to Wembley and suffered an even heavier defeat.

England had often struggled to translate individual talent into collective dominance during the Golden Generation years. But on 9 September 2009, everything clicked.

Lampard struck twice, Steven Gerrard added another brace and Rooney was also on target as England swept Croatia aside 5-1 to secure qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

The scoreline barely flattered the hosts. England were fast, aggressive and ruthless, producing one of their most complete performances of the modern era. For supporters who spent years wondering what this group might be capable of, it was a tantalising glimpse.

World Cup dreams shattered in Moscow (2018)

No England-Croatia encounter carries greater significance than the 2018 World Cup semi-final.

Kieran Trippier's brilliant free-kick gave Gareth Southgate's young side an early lead and England appeared on course for their first World Cup final since 1966. But Croatia gradually took control.

Ivan Perisic equalised midway through the second half before Mario Mandzukic struck in extra time to secure a 2-1 victory.

For England, it was a painful reminder of how fine the margins can be at the highest level. For Croatia, it was the greatest night in the nation's football history, sending Zlatko Dalic's side into their first World Cup final.

Sterling settles a Covid-era Wembley thriller (2021)

England and Croatia met again three years later in unusual circumstances.

Delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Euro 2020 was finally played in the summer of 2021, with Wembley hosting the Group D opener behind a reduced-capacity crowd.

The match lacked the drama of Moscow but carried plenty of tension. Croatia, runners-up at the previous World Cup, remained a formidable opponent, while England were desperate to make a strong start on home soil.

The breakthrough arrived in the 57th minute when Raheem Sterling raced onto a pass from Kalvin Phillips and finished confidently beyond Dominik Livakovic. England held on for a 1-0 victory, ending a long wait for a winning start at a European Championship and laying the foundations for a run that ultimately took them to the final.

By then, England versus Croatia had already become one of international football's most unexpectedly compelling rivalries.
