Doncaster triumph on penalties to knock Stockport out of Carabao Cup
Doncaster advanced into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Stockport after the game had finished 1-1 over 90 minutes.
Stockport’s Ollie Norwood lashed a fierce half-volley over the bar early on before Jack Diamond tested Tommy Simkin in the Rovers goal with a tame effort from close range.
Simkin was being kept busy and did well to claw away a shot from the lively Harry Wood before it was the visitors’ turn to attack. Jamie Sterry whistled a fierce strike just wide of goal before Owen Bailey glanced a header the wrong side of the left-hand post right before the break.
The second half began at a furious pace with two goals inside the space of just a few minutes.
Rovers went in front when Alfie May fired home after a knockdown from a corner. However, County levelled up barely a minute later, as Kyle Wootton beat Simkin from close range, moments after a drive had been well-saved by the Doncaster goalkeeper.
Simkin was again called into action to keep out Lewis Bate’s shot from distance. After that, there was little by way of genuine chances as penalties loomed.
Simkin proved the hero again in the shoot-out, keeping out efforts from Ben Osborn and Eoghan O’Connell as Rovers progressed to round two.
