FIFA opens proceedings against Argentina over 'inappropriate messages', assault and unsporting behaviour

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced Wednesday that it has opened proceedings regarding a number of incidents at the World Cup involving Argentina and their players, including the display of a banner following the team's semi-final win over England.
Several players held up a banner proclaiming Argentina's ownership of the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory located off the coast of the South American nation. The banner, which referes to the islands as "Las Malvinas," allegedly runs contrary to FIFA's rules on "using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature," and is just one of several alleged offences by Argentine players and staff being investigated.
The discplinary update lists a host of offences under investigation, including "discriminatory chants and gestures, late kick-offs, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators and the throwing of objects by spectators in relation to several matches of the representative team of Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2026."
Additionally, a post-match brawl that began moments after Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final is also being investigated, with Argentine players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada named along with official Roberto Ayala. Spain's Pablo Martín Páez Gavira is also under investigation for incidents that allegedly occurred in the altercation.
FIFA's Disciplinary Code states that all individuals named in the proceedings have been "provided with the opportunity to present their position," after which a decision will be made by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
