World Cup 2026: Which teams have won back-to-back world titles?

If Argentina do manage to retain the trophy, then they will become the first team to be back-to-back world champions for over 60 years.

Which teams have won back-to-back World Cups?

The last team to win back-to-back World Cups was Brazil, but that was 64 years ago in 1962. 

Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final that year, and did so without footballing legend Pele, who suffered an injury earlier in the tournament. 

This triumph for Brazil saw them join Italy as the only nations to win back-to-back world titles after the Azzurri achieved the same feat in 1934 and 1938.

Has a team won three back-to-back World Cups? 

No team has managed to win three successive World Cups. 

Italy's attempt in 1950, following a 12-year hiatus for the tournament due to the Second World War, was halted after failing to get past the group stage.

Brazil also suffered the same fate in the 1966 World Cup, which was eventually won by England. 

Spain vs. Argentina: World Cup final date, kick-off time, venue

The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina will take place on Sunday, July 19.

The match will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but during this tournament, it is known as the New York/New Jersey Stadium. 

Kick-off will be at 8pm in the UK, which means a 3pm start on the East Coast and 12pm on the West Coast.
