Referee Slavko Vincic makes history ahead of World Cup final

The two teams will meet for football's biggest prize at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, and the referee for the showpiece match has been announced. 

The 46-year-old Slavko Vincic will be the man in the middle and he makes history by becoming the first Slovenian to officiate this marquee fixture. 

He will be joined by fellow countrymen Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic as his assistants. 

Vincic breaks down in tears

Upon hearing the news, Vincic broke down in tears and was consoled by his fellow referees. 

Speaking after the announcement, Vincic described it as an "incredible honour" and is ready to represent his country in the world's biggest sporting event. 

“So, first of all, a shock. Then happiness. I was shaking, so it’s an incredible honour to get the World Cup final,” Vincic said.

“It’s something that… it’s only a dream for a referee, for a young referee when they start. So, I’m very proud, very proud of myself, my team.

“It’s very difficult to put everything into words, but I’m very proud to represent my country, Slovenia, in the biggest sporting event in the world. So, yeah, I’m very proud. My team is very proud and we will do our best.”

What is Vincic's big match experience? 

Vincic has experience refereeing some of the biggest matches in both club and international football. 

In 2024, he officiated the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, and two years prior, the Europa League final between Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt. 

Vincic has refereed Spain previously and that came in their European Championship semi-final win against France in 2024.  

The Slovenian so far has refereed three matches at this World Cup. 

His first was the 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco, followed by Algeria's win over Jordan in the group stage and then Mexico's Round of 32 win against Ecuador.
