Red-hot Kane gunning for World Cup glory after 'best season' ever

The Three Lions captain scored a staggering 61 goals in all competitions in 2025-26 as Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

He also netted six more for his country, including the only goal in the World Cup warm-up win over New Zealand.

And Kane is relishing the opportunity to lead Thomas Tuchel’s side in North America as they bid to end the 60 years of hurt endured by a nation desperate for success.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s Group L opener with Croatia, he said: “I’d say, from a personal point of view, I’m coming off the best season I’ve ever had, physically and mentally.

“The way the season ended for me was great — to win the league and the cup final and score three goals there. From a physical point of view I feel in great shape.

“Throughout a career, you need a lot of things to go your way and fall into place at the right time. I feel like it has at this tournament.”

Kane, 32, is England’s all-time leading goalscorer and currently sits joint fourth in the list of record appearance makers.

He refuses to be carried away by talk of the Three Lions being among the favourites to go all the way but is quietly confident.

The former Tottenham striker added: “We just need to start well and prove we could go far in this tournament.

“We've been able to be in the semi-finals and finals — and that only boosts the confidence within the squad. Ultimately, from our point of view, we can only do what we do on the pitch.

“Part of every tournament is for fans to get excited and enjoy the summer. I remember being young, singing the songs and believing it was our time.

“From a player's point of view, we never get too carried away. There is a lot that goes into a tournament like this behind the scenes.”

Assuming Tuchel’s men overcome Zlatko Dalic’s side in Dallas this evening, you can all but guarantee England fans will start to dream the impossible dream.

Following in the footsteps of the heroes of 1966 would certainly ensure Kane and Co go down in history.
