FIFA set to change suspension rule for this year's World Cup

Kicking off on June 11, FIFA is set to stage the biggest edition of the tournament with 48 teams taking part across the US, Canada and Mexico. 

According to BBC Sport, FIFA is set to implement a second amnesty stage when it comes to yellow cards, meaning any accumulated yellow cards will be wiped at the end of the group stage and quarter-finals. 

Under the current rules, a team would have to play five matches before reaching the last eight, and two bookings in any of those matches would result in suspension. 

Why are FIFA changing the rules around yellow cards? 

With this summer's World Cup expanding from 32 to 48 teams, this places extra pressure on players, who will have to play six matches to reach the quarter-finals and could therefore miss a semi-final due to accumulated bookings. 

Therefore, football's governing body believes a change is needed, with two cut-offs being a fairer option than increasing the number of cards required for a ban to three.

Under the proposed rules, bookings in two of the three group stage matches, or two cautions in either the last 32, 16 or quarter-finals would be required for a player to be hit with a ban. 

This proposal will be debated later today when the FIFA Council meets in Vancouver, Canada. 

What other key issues will be debated at FIFA Congress?

A range of issues will be discussed at the FIFA Congress, including the proposal to increase tournament prize money. 

The governing body's reasoning is that an expanded World Cup will provide a broader redistribution of money, rather than the stronger teams receiving a bigger payday. 

Then there is the question of whether Iran will participate due to the war with the US, with Iranian officials concerned about their team's safety.

Despite Iran's requests to FIFA for security guarantees and alternative venues, they are expected to play as planned, with no changes to the tournament's schedule.
