The knockout games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin on Sunday with a showdown between South Africa and Canada in the Los Angeles area.
Both teams finished second in their respective groups, and now they must win or go home.
The South Africans improved as the group stage progressed, shaking off a 2-0 defeat in the tournament opener against Mexico by scoring a late equalizer against Czechia in a 1-1 draw in their second game before stunning South Korea with a 1-0 victory on the final day of Group A action.
Canada, meanwhile, also went 1-1-1 during the group stage, but their path saw them draw Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-1 in Toronto before hammering Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver. The co-hosts stayed in British Columbia for their final Group B encounter, a 2-1 loss to Switzerland in which a Canadian comeback fell just short.
