Tactical analysis: How Spain exploited wide areas to near-perfection against Saudi Arabia

Spain's 4–0 victory over Saudi Arabia was decided by one fundamental tactical imbalance: the European side's ability to exploit wide areas and deliver into the far-post zone, against a defensive structure that could not track runners or regain possession.
Three goals inside 24 minutes rendered the contest meaningless before the interval, with Saudi Arabia's six-man defensive lines offering no resistance once Spain found rhythm through their full-backs and attacking midfielders.
The scoreline reflected a match where one team controlled every meaningful space.
How the far post became Spain's entry point
The pattern of Spain's goals revealed a rehearsed attacking mechanism rather than individual inspiration. Mikel Oyarzabal's assist for Lamine Yamal's opener at 10' came from a pass threaded behind the defensive line toward the far post, with Yamal timing his run to arrive in the channel. The second goal at 21' emerged from chaos inside the box, but the third at 24' repeated the far-post formula: a cross from the right found Dani Olmo, whose header redirected across goal for Oyarzabal to finish at the back post.
Saudi Arabia's compact shape could not prevent Spain from reaching those delivery zones. Pedro Porro operated high on the right, combining with Yamal to stretch the defensive block horizontally. Marc Cucurella mirrored that width on the left, and his involvement continued into the second half when his shot deflected in off Hassan Tambakti for the fourth goal. The full-backs gave Spain constant outlets beyond the Saudi defensive lines, and the crossfield switches of play repeatedly moved the block before the decisive ball arrived.
Midfield control allowed relentless territorial pressure
Spain's dominance of central areas meant Saudi Arabia rarely escaped their own half. Rodri dictated tempo from deep, recycling possession and finding passing angles that kept the ball circulating in dangerous zones. Pedri's movement between the lines created receiving options that pulled Saudi midfielders out of shape, while Dani Olmo drifted into pockets where he could turn and play forward.
The result was a first half where Spain generated 17 shots to Saudi Arabia's two, with possession split 72-28 in the European side's favour. That control allowed Spain to press immediately on any turnover, winning the ball back in advanced positions and launching fresh attacks before the opposition could reorganise. Saudi Arabia's midfielders were chasing shadows, unable to establish any rhythm or create outlets for their isolated forwards.

Why the deep block provided no protection
Saudi Arabia set up to defend in numbers, at times forming a line of six in front of Mohammed Al-Owais. The intention was clear: deny central space and force Spain wide. But the structure collapsed because it could not prevent crosses, could not track runners arriving late at the far post, and could not retain possession long enough to relieve pressure.
Al-Owais made saves from Pedri, Oyarzabal and Yamal before half-time, but he was consistently exposed by movement in front of him. Oyarzabal struck the post and crossbar in the same sequence when chasing a hat-trick, evidence that Spain were generating high-quality chances even when the shots did not go in. The deep block created an illusion of defensive organisation without providing genuine protection of the goal.
The contrast with Saudi Arabia's opening draw against Uruguay was stark. Against the South Americans, defensive discipline and personality had earned a point. Against Spain's movement, width and passing combinations, the same approach produced only disorganisation. The substitutions at half-time brought fresh legs but no tactical adjustment capable of changing the pattern.
Spain's control was so complete that Unai Simón made his first save in the 81st minute, when Abdullah Al-Hamdan finally tested him with a left-footed effort. By then the match had long been settled, the second half reduced to game management and missed chances from Ferran Torres. The 4–0 scoreline accurately reflected a match where Spain dominated space, created superior access to goal, and punished a defensive system that had no answer to width, movement, and far-post delivery.
