Kane posts emotional thank you to England faithful amid World Cup heartache

Harry Kane thanked the England faithful in an emotional social media post last night as he lifted the lid on the team’s World Cup heartache.
The Three Lions were on the verge of reaching Sunday’s final thanks to Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute opener before late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez sent Argentina through.
Amid widespread criticism of his substitutions and tactics, boss Thomas Tuchel caused further controversy yesterday by claiming it was not in England’s DNA to keep the ball.
But Kane, who netted six goals during the run to the semi-finals, issued a classy message to thank the fans for their unwavering support and express his anguish at coming up short in North America.
The England skipper, 32, said: “No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach. We were close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough.
“We’ve given everything over these last seven weeks and to fall short is hard to take!
“I know the expectations are high — and rightly so. We’ve been knocking on the door for eight years now but again are missing that final piece of the jigsaw!
“That’s where we have to go away, process it and find a way to get better. I’m so proud of the boys and what we have shown throughout this tournament — some tough games and tough environments that we have overcome.
“Some memories that will stay with us players and I’m sure you fans for a long, long time! Going for glory doesn’t always mean you will get it.
“You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again — and that’s what we will do. There’s no other way but to keep believing and keeping pushing.

“Thank you to every single fan that travelled and showed their support in the stadiums. Thank you to every fan back home for believing in us.
“Thank you to the boys and staff for everything you have given. As always, win or lose, we learn and go again!”
Midfielder Elliot Anderson, 23, echoed his captain’s sentiments. He posted: “Absolutely devastated. To be so close and come up short is so hard to take.
“I had full belief and confidence in everything this team was doing and what we were about. I thought this was our time but it wasn’t meant to be.
“It will take a while to digest but we will be back competing on the biggest stages.
“Thank you to everyone who supported us, we appreciate all the love. Our time will come.”
Gordon, 25, also vowed the Three Lions would finally have reason to celebrate in years to come.
The Barcelona new boy said on Instagram: “Truly devastated. I genuinely thought this was our time to win after waiting so many years but it wasn’t to be and it’s going to hurt for a while.
“I’ve never wanted to win so badly, not just for the trophy but for everything we built as a group and what it would have meant for England.
“I’ve loved every minute of representing this country at a World Cup and creating memories that will live on for a long time.
“Thank you to everyone who supported us on this journey out here in the US and back home, it was so good to see the togetherness and celebrations. We will have our day.”
