Tuchel teases key tactic for England at World Cup

The tournament begins on Thursday with Mexico and South Africa meeting in the opening game, with England's first game not taking place until June 17 when they face Croatia in Dallas. 

The Three Lions continued their preparations on Wednesday night in the second of three warm-up matches, beating Costa Rica 3-0. 

It was a massive step up compared to last Saturday's win over New Zealand, with the substitutes making their mark, especially striker Ollie Watkins who scored England's third. 

Tuchel hints at England using 'finishers' tactic

Arguably the biggest challenge to navigate at this World Cup is the heat. 

The high temperatures, especially in the US and Mexico means that squad management will be key in energy sapping conditions, hence why squads are made up of 26 players. 

This means that as the matches enter the latter stages, changes will be inevitable and Tuchel appears to have taken this into consideration, and will look to use 'Finishers', a specific set of substitutes which will be brought on to the pitch at a certain point in the match to change the course of a match.

"Yeah, we just saw very good substitutes who of course will be disappointed to not start and come in and just play with the same intensity and quality against a more tired opponent," Tuchel told ITV when asked about whether he showcased some of England's 'Finishers'.

There were some standout individual performances against Costa Rica in Orlando, notably from Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon, but Tuchel refused to be drawn into singling out certain players. 

Instead, he praised the squad as whole in an attempt to maintain a positive squad mentality. 

"Everyone did well, it’s not about one individual player today, it was a very good team performance. We wanted to have this push to the next level, and we clearly got it.

"Counter pressing was good, defending, attitude, togetherness, everything on a very high level."
