Then, in a shootout that ebbed and flowed, it was Jonathan Tah - who had a goal disallowed somewhat harshly by VAR in extra time - who ballooned the ball over the bar and gave Paraguay a third match point to seal the game.
They duly obliged, and now face a last 16 meeting with either France or Sweden as Germany head for the airport with their tails between legs and possibly Jurgen Klopp ready to step in and rejuvenate them.
Morocco down the Dutch
There was more penalty drama in Monterrey, as Morocco continued to show why they are now a big player in world football by dumping out the Dutch.
A late stoppage-time goal sent the game into extra time, but nothing could separate the sides, and it once again went down to spot kicks - where it seemed no one wanted to score.
Five penalties were missed, but in the end, it was the Africans who prevailed as they look to match their feats of four years ago.
It's now time to stop labelling Morocco as 'dark horses' and start ranking them among the elite.

Carlo flexes his brow
In the other Round of 32 game, Brazil left it late to sneak past Japan with a stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli.
Yet, it showed the difference the man in the dugout is making for the five-time winners at this World Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti was the coolest man in the stadium as his subtle tweaks eventually got the South Americans over the line.
It's his demeanour and tactical nous that make Brazil a real threat in this tournament.
