World Cup Daily: Ronaldo strikes back, VAR on vacation and Scotland prepare for history

DAZN News rounds up the biggest stories from the World Cup on Wednesday, June 24.

Ronaldo strikes back and breaks record

Heading into Tuesday's game against Uzbekistan, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was under intense scrutiny after being non-existent in the 1-1 draw with DR Congo.

This fired up the 41-year-old, who was lethal, scoring twice in his team's 5-0 win, and he did not hide his emotions when celebrating.

For Ronaldo, his performance was the perfect way to silence his critics and his goals have made him the only player to score at six World Cups.

VAR slammed by Ghana manager

Not much happened in the 0-0 draw between England and Ghana in Boston.

It was a game of few chances, and one where Ghana frustrated England with a classic low block.

However, Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz was aggrieved with VAR after his team were not awarded a penalty late on after Prince Kwabena Adu was brought down by Ezri Konsa.

"Once again VAR went for a coffee," Quieroz said.

"I'm not sure VAR is still working in the World Cup. We still have VAR? It's working?

"I have some doubts about that because another penalty that they need give to Ghana, a clear penalty against England [was missed]. They're lucky. They're very lucky.

Tuchel: We all must remain positive after Ghana frustration

"It was a clear penalty, red card. You have any doubts about that? You guys who saw the game have any doubts about that or is it only me that was in the game?

"I'm sorry for my sarcasm, but if I say these kind of things seriously they punish me, so I hope you understand that I'm joking."

Scotland prepare for Brazil showdown

All is calm in Miami, but it won't be later when Scotland prepare to face World Cup powerhouse Brazil in their final group match.

Scotland find themselves well positioned when it comes to the best third-placed teams and a Round of 32 place, but a thrashing at the hands of Brazil could end their World Cup journey.

It was an underwhelming performance in the defeat to Morocco, and while Scotland will likely opt for damage control, they need to show something going forward if they are to keep their hopes alive of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in the country's history.
