Only two more Round of 32 games to go as DAZN News rounds up the biggest stories from the tournament on Friday, July 3.

Ron finally lands unicorn goal

The only thing missing from Cristiano Ronaldo's amazing football career had been a World Cup knockout goal - that was until last night.

The Portuguese legend finally got that monkey off his back at the sixth tournament of asking in his country's 2-1 win over Croatia.

It was, though, 'only' from the penalty spot, so an open play goal still eludes him, but I'm sure he won't be too concerned with that kind of technicality.

Even if he is - and this is Ronaldo we're talking about - there's another chance to double down on the overdue milestone as he and Portugal take on Spain.

VAR robs us all

It may have all been different for Ronaldo and his side, had it not been for a controversial VAR call in the closing minutes of the Round of 32 tie.

Josko Gvardiol thought he netted in the 106th minute to force the game into extra time, only for VAR to ruin everyone's fun.

On review, it was judged that Igor Matanovic's faint touch on the ball in the build-up meant Mario Pasalic was in an offside position before he assisted the goal.

The game was delayed by several more minutes while the decision was discussed, but using the 'Snicko' inside the ball, which measures touches of the ball, the goal was disallowed.

Farewells and tributes

The game was also poignant for two emotional moments from Portugal and Croatia.

For the Portuguese, they paid tribute to Diogo Jota, who would surely have been part of this World Cup squad if he hadn't been for his sad passing one year ago yesterday.  The players gathered and posed with his number 21 shirt after the game to commemorate their former teammate.

As for Croatia, the game also signalled the end for their greatest-ever player, Luka Modric. He left the World Cup stage after his sixth tournament and is expected to announce an international retirement now that the finals are over for him and his nation.

Swiss seal last 16 berth

Life was much more straightforward for the Swiss, who booked their spot in the last 16 with a win over Algeria in the day's final tie.

Breel Embolo's goal set Switzerland on their way inside ten minutes, before the game was sealed one minute into the second half by Nottingham Forest's Dan Ndoye.

They will now play the winner of tonight's Ghana vs. Colombia game in the next round.
