The World Cup begins this week in North America as the USA forms part of a trio of hosts alongside Canada and Mexico.
It's a second time around for the US, having first hosted the tournament in 1994, when the landscape was very different for football in the country.
Back then, the MLS was still a year away and 'soccer' was very much at the back of most sports fans' minds Stateside, and many weren't even aware there was a World Cup taking place in their homeland.
As for the national team, it was a squad full of players who mainly played college football in the States, combined with a sprinkling of some notable names that were playing abroad - with John Harkes and Roy Wegerle plying their trade in England.
Yet, as the USA opened their tournament against Switzerland in Michigan, it was the first sign that a wave of change was coming.
The goal that kick-started a memorable run to the last 16 for the US was scored by a man who was playing his football in Germany with FC Saarbrücken and at the time was seen as their star attraction, Eric Wynalda.
His strike, scored whilst wearing the famous denim, saw the USMNT earn a 1-1 draw with the Swiss and it helped their unlikely passage through the group stages, where only a narrow defeat to Brazil ended their unexpected run.
