The United States became the first team to secure a place in the Round of 16, defeating Australia 2–0 in Seattle to win their second consecutive World Cup group match. Cameron Burgess's own goal in the 12th minute and Alex Freeman's header before half-time settled a contest the hosts dominated, particularly in a first half where they completed more than three times as many passes as their opponents. Malik Tillman orchestrated proceedings throughout in Christian Pulisic's absence, delivering set pieces and unlocking Australian defensive structures with his distribution.

Malik Tillman (United States)
Tillman controlled the tempo and dictated attacking play from central and wide positions throughout the 90 minutes. His set-piece delivery created dangerous moments, while his ability to receive under pressure and pick progressive passes consistently unlocked Australian defensive lines. Without Christian Pulisic available, Tillman stepped into the creative void and provided the quality that kept the hosts on the front foot. His combination of technical assurance and tactical awareness made him the outstanding individual on the pitch.
