Jack Wilshere lauds ‘relentless’ Luton after easing past Gillingham

Goals from Nahki Wells, Benny Benagr and Gideon Kodua made sure the Hatters did the business at the Priestfield Stadium.

“We were good, it was everything we wanted,” beamed Wilshere.

“I thought we could have maybe maximised our chances a little bit more in the first half, but that being said I like the way we kept being relentless.

“We kept our spirit high, we kept wanting to attack and we had variation as well, which I liked.

“We kept going and killed their [Gillingham’s] spirit in the stadium. I’m really happy with the performance and the result.”

Kodua could have had a second late on when he struck a shot against a post, but Wilshere was pleased with the chances his side created.

“We want to be relentless this season with our attacking,” he added. “It’s about finding the right spaces, arriving in the box and everyone contributing with goals.”

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth was in philosophical mood and said: “We were okay, but not at full tilt.

“I felt there was a little bit of pre-season about us, but I’m glad it’s happened in the Carabao Cup.

“Luton are a super team, I think they’ll be in the Championship come 2027-28. I really do believe that.

“Unfortunately, we were just a little bit too easy to score against. We had to be more tenacious and resilient.

“There were some decent performances in there, but also some real eye-openers.”
