Leam Richardson impressed at how Reading dealt with Bromley’s style
Leam Richardson hailed his Reading side as they overcame League One new boys Bromley 5-4 on penalties to progress to the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The Royals took the lead through Josh Stokes after 14 minutes but Michael Cheek equalised for Bromley 19 minutes later.
Reading midfielder Lewis Wing missed a penalty with 20 minutes left and Bromley ended the game with 10 men after substitute Richard Taylor was shown a second yellow card in the last minute.
Visiting goalkeeper Joel Pereira proved the match winner, saving Ethon Archer’s spot-kick after the Royals scored all five of their efforts.
Reading boss Richardson said: “We knew it would be a challenge coming here. Bromley play a certain way and you must stand up to it and I thought we did that excellently.
“The most important thing is what we can learn from this win and how we apply it to our next game.
“I’m happy with how we managed minutes for players today and with another full week’s training we should be raring to go next week. We are still looking to bring some bodies in as we are still light in some areas.”
Bromley manager Andy Woodman said: “I thought we showed what we are about today, we had all the DNA and characteristics that I wanted to see. Reading started really well but once we started doing what we are good at, I thought we competed well and had chances we should have taken.
“Overall that was a good finale before the important stuff starts next week.”
