Maisie Adam unable to support Leeds at Brighton due to mother-in-law’s party
Comedian Maisie Adam had an inconvenient commitment keeping her from the Premier League clash between Brighton and her beloved Leeds — her mother-in-law’s birthday party.
Saturday’s fixture seemed tailor-made for the football-loving stand-up, who grew up in North Yorkshire supporting the Whites but now lives in the Sussex city.
Adam, a Soccer Aid regular who has also presented women’s football on Channel Four, was asked by a BBC Radio Two listener whether she would be at the Amex Stadium, prompting an amusing exchange with host Romesh Ranganathan and travel and traffic presenter Sally Boazman.
“I blooming wish,” said the 32-year-old. “No, I’m going to my dear mother-in-law Diane’s birthday in Portsmouth.”
Ranganathan swiftly pounced on the awkwardness, replying: “And Diane, she wishes she wasn’t coming! She wishes she was at the game – you heard it here.”
Adam protested: “No, no, no. Obviously I’m delighted to be going to Diane’s birthday party and a close second would be Brighton-Leeds.” But Boazman was not convinced, telling her: “That doesn’t sound at all sincere, Maisie.”
Adam previously said watching a home win at Elland Road with her family would be part of an ideal weekend. She headed to the Hampshire stretch of the south coast knowing Diane would eventually hear of her on-air comments: “Oh no, she said she’s going to listen back on iPlayer.”
