How Rodri's Barcelona vs. Real Madrid decision could affect Man Utd's transfer ambitions

Even with one foot out the door at the Etihad Stadium, Rodri could still take a parting shot at Manchester United.
The Spain midfielder, who was integral to his nation's World Cup triumph last month, finds himself in a tug-of-war between La Liga's two biggest clubs as a rumoured move to Real Madrid appears to have been usurped by rivals Barcelona. Rodri is reportedly leaning towards joining the Catalans after being heavily linked to Real Madrid throughout the summer, and the consequences could eventually be felt as far away as Old Trafford.
That's because Real Madrid were prepared to make a big money offer for the 30-year-old Ballon d'Or recipient, who also recently took home Golden Ball honours as the best player at the World Cup, with Manchester City set to receive a transfer fee of roughly €60 million. To make room for Rodri, plus other transfer targets, Los Blancos were prepared to sell both Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga for a combined €150m.
Neither of the French midfielders are said to want out at the Bernabeu, but with Jose Mourinho reshaping the Real Madrid squad it has been reported that Tchouameni and Camavinga are among the stalwarts who could be used to raise funds for incoming transfers — both potential and confirmed.
That's where the Red Devils come in, as Man United have been linked to Tchouameni and Camavinga as the team look to improve on their recent third-place finish in the Premier League. Manager Michael Carrick now has the full-time title after achieving great success as a caretaker during the closing half of the 2025-26 campaign, and a pair of experienced, internationally-tested midfielders could help provide another boost in the club's quest to challenge for domestic and European silverware.
However, with Barça seemingly having swooped in for the decorated Spaniard, both Real Madrid and Manchester United may have to alter their immediate plans. Such is the entangled world of transfers, that a battle between rival clubs in Spain could also affect the ambitions of a top English side.
