Micky Mellon tells Oldham ‘nothing has been achieved yet’ after latest win

Micky Mellon has warned Oldham about getting carried away after they extended their unbeaten run to 10 league matches with a 3-0 home win against 10-man Notts County.

Mellon, who guided Oldham back into the EFL in June, saw his side move to within one point of the League Two play-off places with a fifth straight win.

Winger Kane Drummond gave the Latics a fifth-minute lead and Mike Fondop added a second-half brace after Oliver Norburn’s dismissal.

Melon said: “Let’s not forget the club has had a tough time in the last few years, and it is good to have a good day in the sunshine.

“Nothing has been achieved yet, all that there is promise. We have to keep our foot down and keep driving.

“If we get everything right, we can be a match for a really good team like Notts County, but we have to do it again and again as Notts County, MK Dons and Cambridge do.

“That was the good teams and the good players do, and that is the challenge to keep going.

“We knew how big a game it was and knew if we got a result what it would do for us, but we have to keep going as nothing is decided yet. All we have done is driven our way into the conversation.

“The togetherness of the group is magnificent. We are enjoying our football, the training, playing and being together.”

Mellon described it as a very good performance in difficult conditions, with driving rain and swirling wind playing a part for much of the match.

It was a night to forget for the Magpies, who would have gone into the top three had they recorded a third straight victory.

Head coach Martin Paterson was left to reflect on what might have been had his side not been reduced to 10 men three minutes into the second half when Norburn – recently back from a ban after being dismissed for throwing away an opponent’s boot – was sent off for a second booking.

Paterson said: “The sending off changed the dynamic of the game and we struggled from them on. The game had been nicely balanced until then.

“I will keep it in house, but it is obvious what I would have said to the player at half-time.

“That’s five sendings off this season and when you are pushing for things in this league, you are not going to get there because it is too many to carry. It is something I will have to address.

“If you add up all the minutes we have played with 10 men, it is painful.

“And if you break down their goals, we have handed them all away.”
